Relapse in AA — What to Do If You Slip and How to Get Back

  • 1 min read

Relapse is common in recovery from alcoholism. Research suggests that 40-60% of people in recovery experience at least one relapse. The Big Book addresses this reality directly — not to excuse relapse, but to ensure that a slip doesn't become a permanent return to drinking.

What AA Says About Relapse

The program doesn't promise that working the steps makes relapse impossible. It promises that thoroughly working the program makes it unlikely. When relapse does happen, AA's message is clear: get back. Go to a meeting. Call your sponsor. Don't let shame keep you out of the rooms. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking — not a perfect record.

The Difference Between a Slip and a Relapse

Many members make a distinction between a slip — a brief return to drinking — and a full relapse back into the pattern of alcoholic drinking. Both require immediate action, but the response is the same: stop drinking, get to a meeting, get honest with your sponsor, recommit to the steps.

If you're coming back after a relapse, AABlueBook is here. Your sobriety date can be reset. The Big Book is waiting. The meeting finder will find you a meeting today. Free year on iOS: bit.ly/aabfree. Android: FREEMONTHFL on Google Play.
