Step 11 AA — Prayer and Meditation in Recovery

  • Jun 7
  • 1 min read

Step 11 of Alcoholics Anonymous asks us to seek through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. For many people in recovery, this step gets less attention than the earlier steps. That's a mistake.

Why Step 11 Matters

Steps 1-9 clean house. Step 10 maintains it. Step 11 is the maintenance of the spiritual connection that makes everything else possible. Long-term sobriety without an active Step 11 practice is possible, but it's harder. The people with decades of quality sobriety almost universally have a daily prayer and meditation practice.

Morning and Evening Practice

The 12 & 12 describes both a morning and evening Step 11 practice. In the morning: ask for guidance for the day ahead. In the evening: review the day. What did I do well? Where did I fall short? What should I do differently tomorrow? This simple rhythm, practiced daily, creates the spiritual condition that makes recovery sustainable.

The Digital God Box in AABlueBook supports your daily Step 11 practice — write your morning prayer, surrender your evening review. The full 12 & 12 text is in your pocket. Free year on iOS: bit.ly/aabfree.
