People who represent causes and ideas often meet a deep human need. In A.A., we honor that truth. Yet we must also recognize that living in the public eye carries risks—especially for us.
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 181
As a recovering alcoholic, I strive to live by the principles of honesty, humility, and integrity that the A.A. program teaches. In my drinking days, I constantly sought attention and the spotlight. Today, with clearer awareness of my past mistakes, it would not be right to chase prestige—even if the intention were to promote the message of recovery. The real power lies in the quiet publicity of transformation itself. The miracles of A.A. shine brightest when others simply witness the changes in our lives. That living example is a far greater recommendation for the Fellowship than anything I could say.
